With right running shoes and clothing running can be comfortable even on cold days

Days are getting shorter, temperatures lower and leaves almost completely fell off trees. In late fall when winter is around the corner you probably ask yourself what to wear when you go running.

Is it warm or cold outside, maybe something in between? How to protect yourself from the wind and rain? Is a light running windbreaker enough or do you need a winter running jacket? You probably need winter running shoes with a waterproof membrane too, and so on.

In our shop you can find top quality men's in women's running apparel and running shoes from renowned manufacturers like Salomon, Brooks, HOKA ONE ONE, Odlo, New Balance, etc.

Running shoes for autumnal days

No matter if you do trail running or conventional running, you need to be aware that in autumn the surface is almost always slippery, that grass is wet and trails are dotted with puddles. Because everything is wet and damp, you feel cold in inappropriate shoes, and because of softened skin you quickly get blisters.

So, pick running shoes with a quality sole, rough profile and made of a waterproof fabric that successfully channels sweat off of your feet. In autumn, the well-known GORE-TEX membrane in shoes works like a charm.

How to dress for a run in autumn

Sportswear for comfortable running in cold weather must primarily enable channelling off sweat and excessive heat from the body. Damp clothes lead to feeling cold and to catching a cold.

We recommend sportswear made of merino wool or synthetic fibres like polyester, elastane or polyamide. For the outside layer we recommend GORE-TEX. By all means, avoid usage of clothes made of cotton which absorbs moisture and makes clothes damp and cold.

For comfortable running in cold weather follow the principle of layered clothing

Upper (part of the body):

  • technical undershirt,
  • light breathable T-shirt (tee) or sweatshirt,
  • thermo sweater (pullover) made of technical material with good breathability, moisture removal and thermal isolation,
  • protective (shell) layer, light running windbreaker made of breathable and waterproof material or winter running jacket for extremely low temperatures,

Lower (part of the body):

  • technical underwear,
  • thermo running pants,
  • proper running socks,
  • proper running shoes, shoes for running, gym shoes … Well, sneakers!

Technical underwear for running

You put technical underwear (shirt, pants) directly on your skin. As the base layer, shirt and pants take care for your skin to always feel dry, to channel sweat to the upper clothing layers and to keep your body warm.

By wearing top quality apparel your body will be dry all the time and perform at an optimal temperature.

Check: Men’s active wear or women’s active wear

Running tees

OK, you've got the base layer. Now you put on a tee. Same as underwear, running tees are made of light and elastic materials that dry fast and channel off moisture and excess heat from your body.

Running tees for colder weather are slightly thicker. The inside can be made of fleece with a pocket or two. Some outsides are made of windstopper material that prevents cold wind to penetrate and get to your body. In our shops you can buy men and women running tees

Running pullovers (sweaters, hoodies)

Pullovers keep your body temperature at a consistent level and work as an isolator. They also channel off moisture to the outside layer. Some running pullovers are coated with a waterproof coating so that you can use them as a protection from light rain and dew.

Running windbreakers

Windbreakers are extremely light and elastic. They prevent your body to get wet by rain and to cool down by cold wind. Windbreakers are usually so compact that you can easily put them in a pocket and carry them with you just in case.

Thermo running pants

Men’s and women’s running pants are made of materials that effectively channel off moisture from your body, dry quick and provide more support for your muscles. Rear side of running pants is often made of mesh materials to provide better temperature regulation and comfort. They can have a zippered pocket or two for bits and bobs, leg zippers to dress them easier, and reflecting elements to be seen better in dusk and dark.

Thermo running gloves

Warm gloves are indispensable piece of running gear in colder days. They keep your fingers and hands warm. The outside layer can be coated with waterproof coating, the inside layer is mostly made of soft fleece.

Running socks

Don't forget about proper socks! Proper running socks provide additional stability to your feet and prevent blisters to occur. For quicker recovery we recommend compression socks.

Cap, band or Buff

They protect your head and ears from different weather effects, moderately warm, and in warmer weather channel off moisture from your head to keep you dry.
