Why is helmet a mandatory cycling accessory?

Why is helmet a mandatory cycling accessory?

Although nowadays all bike helmets look downright fantastic, a helmet is not a fashion accessory, but primarily ensures cyclist’s safety. Since there is a variety of helmets to choose from, often equipped with advanced technologies used by helmet manufacturers, we are sure everyone can find a perfect fit for themselves.

Due to technological progress modern bike helmets are well designed, light, airy and comfortable. Therefore we truly do not see a reason why anybody would ride a bike without it. The fact is that many cycling accidents end up with head hitting the ground, stone, root or even a tree, so head protection is really important. Hence, a helmet truly is a mandatory cycling accessory, which in case of an accident prevents the worst.

On our store shelves you can find male, female and kids bike helmets by renowned manufacturers like POC, Met, Specialized, Scott, Uvex and others. Helmets differentiate by purpose, fit system, additional protection technologies (MIPS, SPIN, etc.) and by the way they are produced and of which materials they consist of.

Which bike helmet is the right one?

They come in all sorts of colours and shapes and, of course, price ranges. We can divide them in several groups:

- road helmets,
- MTB helmets,
- MTB full face helmets,
- kids helmets,
- BMX / dirt helmets.

Road helmet

Road bike helmets are usually very light and airy. They combine good ventilation, aerodynamic shape and light construction for utmost efficiency at every ride. One of the main features that almost every road bike helmet excels in is as small as possible contact surface with the head. Less contact, more efficient the ventilation is. Premier helmets are often equipped with MIPS safety system which in case of an impact reduces the rotational forces to the brain. Various fitting systems for adjustment of the inner circumference are their virtue so that they fit nicely on heads of all shapes.

MTB helmet

Already at a first glance there is a difference between MTB helmets and road bike helmets as MTB helmets cover more head, especially the neck part, have a visor and thus provide a complete protection for the head. They are heavier and less airy. Premium helmets are equipped with MIPS safety system, some even have RECCO transmitter.

MTB full face helmet

MTB full face helmet is an indispensable piece of equipment for all downhillers, freeriders and enduro cyclists as it provides protection for the whole head, including face. Of course these helmets are even heavier than MTB helmets, but are in most cases equipped by good ventilation systems and soft inner foam padding which provide maximum comfort. The inner foam pads are in most cases removable and washable.

Kids helmet

Kids helmets for the youngest cyclists provide excellent protection from impacts in case of accidents. Cute colours, warm and washable pads and light weight mean that kids simply forget they are wearing a helmet.

How to pick the right size?

When you are buying a helmet your primary concern needs to be how the helmet fits your head. It shouldn’t be too tight and not too loose. Before you try one, measure your head circumference. Take a soft measuring tape and wrap it around your head approximately one centimetre above eyebrows and ears. For example, if you measured 56 cm, it means you wear a size M helmet (55-58 cm).

Our advice: Pick a helmet that fits best to your head and do not let colour and shape influence on what you buy. Only a perfectly fitting helmet is a safe helmet that enables comfortable all-day cycling.
