Cycling on cold days? Why not!

Cycling on cold days? Why not!

There is nothing wrong with cycling only in nice and warm weather, after all, there really is nothing better than turning the pedals along sun bathed path. But doing it on cold days can be extremely invigorating and with the right equipment, also completely comfortable.

The secret to comfortable cycling be it road or mountain on colder days lies not in the most expensive jacket your money can buy but in the multi-layered clothing.

It’s true that expensive jacket is warm and waterproof but that alone isn’t enough for complete comfort in all weather conditions. What you have to pay attention to on colder days is always to dress in such a way that you are ready for changing conditions: cold, wind, rain, snow and maybe even sun and higher temperatures.

Active underwear or basic layer of clothing for cycling in cold weather

Aktivno perilo za kolesarje

You put active underwear directly on your skin and it is perhaps the most important layer of all. For just a fraction of the price of that expensive jacket, you’ll get a lot with a really good base layer.

Pants and t-shirts designed to be used as a first layer have this wonderful property of wicking moisture away from your body while retaining your body heat. So, quality active underwear will keep you dry and prevent the body from cooling down.

Active underwear can be made of synthetic fibers or soft and comfortable merino wool.

We recommend that you have at least one of each type in your closet and choose the one that is most suitable for cycling in the current weather conditions.

Thermal cycling pants

After the base layer thermal cycling pants are next. We recommend pants with suspenders, long or short, the suspenders will keep the pants in place and prevent uncomfortable creases. For cold days, just wear long thermal cycling pants. When choosing, pay attention to the lining, which should not be too thin or too thick. Women's thermal cycling pants  are usually equipped with an insert that is adapted to the female anatomy.

Long tight pants with suspenders, for cycling on cold days, are also suitable for all mountain bikers. If you don't want to be mistaken for a "roadie", you can simply put your wide shorts over them. The fear of getting cold is unnecessary and don't worry - you will still look like a real mountain biker;)

Like the base layer of clothing, the pants also take care of moisture wicking and retain body heat.

Thermal cycling jersey

A good thermal shirt will also keep you cozy and warm while at the same time it will perfectly wick moisture away from the body. You can choose between men's and women's thermal shirt.

The sleeves and the side of the cycling shirt are usually made from warm and extremely elastic fabrics which ensure unimpeded movement and superior comfort in all positions on the bike.

The front part of thermal cycling shirts which are intended for cycling on the coldest days is often made of a windproof material. As a rule they are also equipped with a zipper along the entire length of the front, which helps to regulate the temperature during more intense movement.

For greater usability there are pockets on the back where you can store things you can not miss on your ride.

Thermal cycling jackets

For even more warmth you can wear a thermal cycling jacket over everything we've listed so far. In the front or on the whole outside it's usually made of windproof materials and the inside it's usually covered in warm and soft fleece, which takes care of maintaining body temperature. Women's thermal cycling jackets  are usually tailored and in more vivid colors as men.

Of course, thermal jackets also wick moisture away from the body and at the same time make sure that the skin can still "breathe". Thus, they prevent excessive sweating and regulate the internal temperature.

The vast majority of quality thermal jackets are coated on the outside with a kind of water-repellent coating which ensures that in the event of rain or snow water doesn't penetrate inside.

Cycling vests

Vests for cyclists are basically sleeveless windbreakers and protect the body from cooling down due to the wind.

They are made of windproof materials and are very convenient due to their compactness. When you don't need it, you simply roll it up and put it in your shirt pocket.

In conditions when you don't worry about getting your hands too cold  you are not in danger of being caught in the rain on the way, a cycling vest turns out to be a very convenient piece of extra layer of clothing.

Pants and sleeves

So, you decided on a trip and put on shorts and a short cycling shirt. But as soon as you step outside you find that it is quite cold outside. What now? We have a solution - pants and sleeves for cyclists.

Pants and sleeves are a very convenient piece of clothing for changeable weather. Like other clothing they also wick away moisture and make sure that you stay dry under them.

They are made of synthetic materials that keep you warm, but when it gets too hot you can take them off quickly and simply put them in the back pocket of a cycling shirt or jacket due to their small size.

Thermal cycling gloves

When cycling in cold weather, the palms of the hand and soles of the feet are the most exposed parts of the body. If you’ve ever really got  cold fingers while cycling, then your how hard it is to brake and even shift with icy fingers.

For comfortable cycling at low temperatures we recommend buying warm thermal  windproof gloves that retain heat. Most thermal cycling gloves are made of Windstopper material and fleece on the inside.

Shoecovers

Don't forget  on your feet, put on your shoecovers over your cycling shoes. Only these will prevent you from having wet feet, the cold wind will not penetrate into the inside of the shoe and you will be happy to ride an extra lap. Here you will find cycling shoecovers from Castelli, Northwave, Gore Bike Wear ...

Thermal caps

Don't forget on your head!! Modern cycling helmets are a "true marvel of technology". Tested in wind tunnels, large air vents for maximum cold air supply, which cools you pleasantly in summer ... Hmm ... what's wrong with the previous sentence? Where's cold, winter?

In winter you need thermal cap under a helmet. We recommend buying a thermal cap that fits snugly to the shape of the head, is windproof and takes care of draining moisture away from the body. The tight fit ensures that the helmet is comfortably and securely fitted.

Most caps are made of synthetic materials that offer just that. Heat, breathe and prevent cold winds from causing headaches.

You can go on a bike even in the colder part of the year just remember to get dressed the way you need to.
