Why are ski helmets essential equipment for every skier?

Ski helmets are not only designed to protect you in case of a fall – in a serious accident they can even save your life. They also protect against wind, cold and moisture – better than a knitted hat. Thanks to rapid technological progress and new manufacturing processes, modern ski helmets look excellent and can even be a true fashion accessory.

Since ski helmets are comfortable, lightweight and stylish, we recommend wearing one every time you hit the slopes. In addition, ski helmets are legally required for all young skiers under the age of twelve.

Types of ski helmets

Helmets are divided according to their purpose, construction (manufacturing method), and of course by the intended user. So, if we talk about who they are designed for, we can say that we have:

By purpose, ski helmets can roughly be divided into:

Helmets for skiing on groomed slopes. They can have “soft ears” (HALF SHELL), which are removable, making them lighter and more comfortable. Or they can have a hard part over the ears (FULL SHELL) and provide the highest level of protection – these helmets are also mandatory for competitive skiers. They usually have fewer vents than freeride helmets.
Helmets for off-piste skiing – freeride and backcountry. Typically equipped with soft ear pads (HALF SHELL) and a large number of vents, providing ventilation when you need to hike to your descent.
Ski touring helmets are extremely light and breathable, very similar to mountaineering helmets.
Freestyle helmets are heavier, equipped with vents, and some models allow wearing a beanie under the helmet.

By construction we distinguish:

Half shell helmets with “soft ears” are comfortable, light, and usually come with more vents. The ear pads and inner liner can be removed and washed; in some models, speakers are integrated for listening to music while skiing. Most skiers choose this type of helmet.

Full shell ski helmets, with a fully hard shell, provide the highest level of protection but are heavier, less ventilated and slightly less comfortable. If you seek maximum safety, this is the right choice.
